Juvinile Court Book Club

Writing Program

The JCBC Writing Program works in conjunction with the Sarah Anthony School Language Arts Committee. This committee establishes writing contests which offer incentives to encourage both the development of reading and writing skills. The students are part of the San Diego County Office of Education – Juvenile Court and Community Schools. The School is located inside the Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. Many of these students are at-risk, under privileged, minority children from a variety of backgrounds from all over San Diego County. A large portion of these children are part of the Department of Social Services and have been in and out of group homes and foster care for years. These students have lacked consistency in their lives and have large gaps in their educational history.

In an effort to promote literacy, our committee formed to encourage these children to get involved in school, by making it fun. Every month our committee offers a different writing contest to our students, with the incentive of winning a novel of their choice. Monthly contests include: Expository Essay, Biographical and Autobiographical Narratives, Response to Literature, Poetry, Short Story, Spelling Bee and Written Interview.

JCBC is proud to partner with the Sarah Anthony School Language Arts Program by offering prizes each month and providing guest speakers, authors and poets as requested. These contests have motivated our students to get involved in the writing process and given them a variety of literature to explore.
